Yeah Twin Snakes is a fun remake. Maybe it will be included in a future collection. It's a shame the original MGS isn't in a better state in the first collection. The collection should have been the definitive way to play it going forward, but emulator, PSN download, or original disc is still far superior to the re-release. :/

Me too. Even more I miss the old way of making online fps games. We've lost something in this world of SBMM and live service game making. A game like MOH2010/Warfighter can't be made anymore. Even if it was, I fear the average fps player wouldn't be interested. We have to wait for entire trends and gamer mindsets to change if we ever want to return to the golden age of fps. :/

Maybe in Vol. 2, we can dream. :(

Yup. I love MGS1. It deserves the glory and it's place in history for what it accomplished. Twin Snakes doesn't deserve those same accolades since it didn't break any new ground on its own. But it is a better videogame to play and I still love playing it to this day. :)

@@jujuFL8 My brother and I are doing well. They officially pulled the plug on the R6L servers in 2011. After that we went on to play a ton of Medal of Honor 2010 and Warfighter. A bit of BF3/4/Hardline and some CoD. We then took some time off until Battle Royale games came along with H1Z1 which we played a lot. When that ran its course we eventually hopped on Warzone 1 for about a year. Meowth's life then got too busy to game together much so he quit and hasn't been able to do it since. I continued to play with other friends until a year ago when I stopped. I'll still play fps games occasionally but haven't found something that hooks me like the old days, so I mostly just play non-competitive games solo. Once a gamer always a gamer I guess. If you're curious about those times after R6L, Meowth and I ran this YT channel back then posting hundreds of gameplay videos, some commentary, some live chat as we put the hurt on people haha.

@@Wallguy same here, I occasionally play MW2 2022 but it is not the good old feeling of R6. I’m personally waiting for xDefiant which seems to be a good competitive FPS. Wait and see. We do have some new skips found about a month ago. But skipping the docks elevator can only be done on Normal difficulty and below. The skip requires a throwable item and there is no way to get one on Extreme this early in the game. Glitches are definitely allowed though. I do a bunch of them in this video. And whenever I get around to updating this 3 1/2 year old run I'll be sure to add any new discoveries that have come since. Thanks for watching friend. :)

Great to hear from you Tobibomber! I remember playing with you for sure. We had some good times back then with Gigi and Romy. The brothers of the east facing the brothers of the west (with my brother Meowth). What are you playing nowadays? I've mostly stopped playing competitive games as of late but I did play a lot of Medal of Honor 2010 and Warfighter after R6. @@AvA81584 I haven't spoken to many people after Gigi shut down the R6Lockdown community website. I am still steam friends with Diger_inc, NOCS_01, and GIGN_Member but I don't really talk to them either. I keep lightly in touch with dallas_oswald but not too often. Everyone's lives have moved on I guess. But every so often an old friend will stop by and comment on a video like you did and it's always great to reminisce about the fun times we had back in the day. :)

Yeah I've been monitoring the situation as always. New discoveries are always good motivation to come back. I've been coming back to set new standards periodically since the game came out. I prefer to play on Extreme but the dock skip is not possible on Extreme yet (probably not ever). However some other smaller time saves that were just discovered are. So it is definitely interesting. But considering the level of optimization of my existing WR the new saves won't give me a free PB, just a slightly easier time getting there. Gotta put in a lot of de-rust work to play optimally. I will say that the larger skips like the docks skip on the easier difficulties make them more appealing than they would be otherwise. It's one of the most desired skips we've always wanted. So who knows what is in store for me in the future. For now I'm idle other than to learn and optimize any new discoveries. Watch Bluemetal or Aerlien if he comes back. They are currently the only runners capable of beating this WR, even with current new discoveries. They are great guys and fantastic runners. :)

I try to discuss that during the credits of the video. It's already pushed pretty hard for what a human can do in execution combined with RNG. One major discovery in the time since this video makes the extremely difficult prison skip much easier to do, which means many more runs can survive past there with a chance to carry good RNG to the end. So another 15-20 seconds is reasonable, while 55:xx is technically possible if extremely unlikely cards align. As I mentioned in the video I've been on pace to late game for 55:5x around 3 times and I assume that frequency would increase with the easier prison trick. But that's a very difficult time to get. If I made new attempts I'd shoot for 56:1x first and then see how I felt about it. I'm hesitant to do more runs atm because this run basically killed the category 3 years ago. I'd like to see someone have the enjoyment of beating it before I break new ground because I don't want to further discourage competition by making it even more difficult to beat. That skip is not possible in the Twin Snakes remake. You must be using a version of the original Metal Gear Solid to perform the boba skip.

I miss the game too. I wish it got the care it deserved before and after launch so it could thrive to its potential. Maybe one day we'll get more than a simple VR game. Yeah there are several places in the run where you might expect to get kills but you don't. The mouse isn't a human enemy so it doesn't count. Neither do the ravens. At 48:49 I send a guard over a rail to his doom and it doesn't count as a kill since he falls out of bounds and never technically tallies as a death. Then on the escape I blow up barrels to take out guards but they don't die, they only get knocked out, despite all the blood lol.

Thanks for the kind words. I try to keep people informed and entertained during the runs. I've done 3 commentaries I think for this game. First time was in this run where I got the first sub hour Big Boss ever on emulator (WR). Then I did one for the first sub hour Big Boss run on original hardware, a 59:48 (WR). Then years later I released a video for the still standing original hardware world record improvement of 56:34. As far as re-claiming this emulator world record, I never really lost it. Officially I haven't submitted a new video that improves this one, but my best time is 55:58 (an unofficial WR). Emulator runs are by default about 1:28 quicker than console runs due to fast loads, so in quality the 55:58 emu run is technically not as good as the excellent 56:34 I did on console. So if I do submit to the emu category again I want to put in a real effort to do the run justice. Maybe a 55:0X time or close. As far as radar you can have it on if you want for Big Boss. We turn it off because it removes some cutscenes in the beginning of the game that saves 5-6 seconds. And also because once you get used to the speedrun you know where all the enemies are and don't even need to look at the radar. :)

@@Wallguy well, im glad that u have unofficial wr. Looking forward for your new run :) I already gave up on BB attempt. I couldn't beat the phase 2 of Hind D. Iirc i did BB rank on psx (ps1 emulator) back in the day (i used save state abused tho), but this time I couldn't do it on Twin Snakes. I tried your tips on phase 2 but I died easily coz maybe i have only half hp at that boss fight ( tho maybe it doesn't make a difference even if I am full hp).

@@diamondgirls6141 Yeah Hind takes practice. You definitely want to have full health when you get to it, and it also helps if you haven't burned your 1 allowed (for Big Boss) ration yet. Then you have some life to work with. Though once you understand the Hind's movement you can reliably fight him without getting hit if you want. I only take damage in the speed runs to maximize speed and because I know he won't hit me enough with my strategy to kill me. :)

What we do is extend phase 1 until Ninja is out of life, or at least until he only needs one more hit to die. You can extend phase 1 forever but the game won't let you kill Ninja without going to at least phase 2. The way to extend phase 1 as long as you like is to lead with a socom shot in the first combo (you want Ninja to block the shot) followed by 2 more punches/attacks to complete the first combo. Then you do a second combo like a punch punch kick. Next start again with the socom leading combo and continue the process until Ninja is out of life. To trigger phase 2, you do two consecutive attack combos (no socom shot).

An easy reliable way to climb tower A is to copy the first part you see me do right before the laser grid. Those tosses knock out the chasing guards and buy you some time. The next key thing is to not be afraid to get hit. No matter what happens you want to keep moving up so the chasing guards don't catch back up to you. So equip the m9 and do running shots all the way up. You don't need to use stuns like in this video, that's a more advanced strat that takes a lot of practice to learn the timing. Watch this video link for an example of me mostly just using the m9 and still having plenty of life at the end. It really is easy once you learn how to knock out the guards at the beginning, and then keep moving after that point all the way to the top. Hey Snatcher, long time no see! I remember you from way back. You're actually in a lot of my Warfighter videos since you played a lot. It's got to be pretty rough trying to play this game on any platform these days. Last time I took a look was years ago. I'm frankly surprised that EA hasn't shut the servers down yet. I wish we had a good MoH game to play nowadays.

@@Wallguy There are only like 5 servers left. I only play on Sundays mornings/afternoon . Games aren't as fun as your server was, alot of team stacking now a days. I still like to watch maybe the last game I played against you guys. "Cheating failure with an unlimited amount of never give up." You guys just had to many gunslingers at the end. Not to mention my team couldn't cover the bomb. Yes they do need another MOH. But until then will just play this one till it dies completely. Even then will still play the campaign. Well hope you guys start playing another game in the near .future

I've been speedrunning it off and on since it came out in 2004. So I have an abundant amount of experience with it. We build and test strats whenever we get ideas and then drill them into our muscle memory. As the years pile on this process has optimized the speedrun to absurd degrees. We have a decent number of runners but not compared to a game like Super Mario 64 or something. Despite that our core runners are very invested so our discoveries and mastery of the game can compare to many of the most optimized speed games. Many people have joined me in improving the run since 2017 and we still make new finds on occasion (the run has come a long way since 2017). It's a fun thing to be a part of and a great way to keep playing a game I've loved for 18 years. Thanks for watching. :)

Most of the people who "hate" it only do so because they think they're supposed to. The original opinion they usually parrot was a single reviewer from the launch period who gave console war weirdos the flimsy excuses they needed to tear down a great game that didn't appear on other systems. None of those hold any water and that's why people playing this game without exposure to the hate clique love this version like any honest MGS fan should. :)

@@Wallguy only issue I have is maybe the music and how I want it like the original but they have a mod for this. I played this version in 2004 on the GameCube when I was younger and was blown away. I believe it was my first time playing Mgs1, I'm not sure but it was awesome !

@@Kyle-ii4fp I like most of the music but I do miss some stand out themes from the PS1 version. I wouldn't have minded a few of them getting remade for Twin Snakes, especially Rex's Lair. :)

@@Wallguy I would have to relisten to the twin snakes ost but Snake doing that Missle jump is canon to me. I need to listen to twin snakes music again but I prefer twin snakes over the orginal.

The Boba skip is not in Twin Snakes. It has its own skips and tricks however, all of which were attempted successfully in this run. Thanks for watching. :)

The timer in the video is simply for reference, a "real time clock." It doesn't count as the official record time. For that we use IGT, or "in game time" which is what is shown after the credits. The game does normally run its in game timer at almost all times however, including cutscenes and loading sections. It briefly pauses behind the scenes, often for a half a second while loading a new room, or a packet of upcoming cutscenes. This is why when watching an original hardware run like this one the real time clock runs almost 2 minutes longer than the true in game time. When we speedrun the game on emulator we have a timer that reads the game memory directly and stays perfectly synced with the in game time. Thanks for watching. :)

It's cool to see another fan of the game. What kind of times were you getting back in 2013?

My PB was 59:48 but I averaged around one hour to 1:15. I didn’t really know the speed scene back than, and I guess in retrospect I was comparing igt to rta so maybe I didn’t technically get the WR lol. But my Wii kicked the bucket and I wasn’t able to run the game until I got a pc a couple weeks ago. One day I want to hold WR in every MG 3D game, but seeing how far things have come has changed some things for me lol

Nah, the emulator works fine. What you want to do is press (and hold) the punch button and shoot button at the same time, then release the shoot button as you approach the enemy and see the laser sight tracking toward your target. If you continue to hold punch afterward you can run and shoot without stopping all the way up. It is very important to keep moving up so trailing guards don't catch up to you. A tip to get the auto-aim to engage best is to face Snake toward the guards' direction as soon as you can the moment you come running around a corner. But don't rush your shot. Wait a moment for the laser to line up. Good luck. :)

I believe hardware/disc combos will matter on any disc based videogame systems after this testing. Ideally games would have a built in IGT that does not count loads/cutscenes so speedrunners would be on equal footing, like MGS4 or Silent Hill. Unfortunately that isn't very common. And systems like PS3 are even worse since model to model there are slight revisions that can greatly affect load times. >_< Thanks for watching!
